Obituary

Sister Febronia Jarosz of the Little Servant Sisters of the Immaculate Conception died peacefully on July 3, 2024 at St. Joseph Nursing Home, Woodbridge, NJ. Fortified by the Rites of the Church.

As Bronislawa Jarosz she was born on September 26, 1921 in Suchy Grunt, Dabrowa County, Poland. Sister entered the Congregation of the Little Servant Sisters of the Immaculate Conception in Stara Wies, Brzozow County In 1937. She made her first vows in 1940 and her final vows in 1945. Sister Febronia studied nursing during World War II. From 1943 to 1963 she was the head surgical nurse in Gorlice County Hospital in Poland.

Obedience directed Sister Febronia to South Africa in 1963. There she studied English, Child Care and was a nurse and director of a home for underprivileged children and a preschool in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg, as well as the local superior of the community from 1966 to 1972.

A new chapter opened when Sister Febronia was appointed superior provincial of the USA Province at the Provincial House then at St. Joseph's Convent in Woodbridge, NJ from 1972 to 1984. Then after three years of service to children in South Africa she was again superior provincial at the new Provincialate in Cherry Hill from 1987 to 1996. Sister next served as community bursar till 1999. Then was the home nurse till retirement in prayer ministry in 2002. Finally Sister Febronia went to the Congregation's St. Joseph Senior Home in Woodbridge in January 2021. With Mother Febronia's vision the Congregation opened the Strawberry Hill Senior Day Center in a hall in Woodbridge, NJ in 1972 that functioned for 40 years. Then with the help of her Sisters and benefactors, the planning, construction and dedication of St. Joseph's Senior Residence in Woodbridge in 1981 – now Assisted Living was realized. This was followed by the construction and dedication of the adjacent St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Woodbridge in 1992.  She foresaw the original plans for the construction of a new Provincialate in Cherry Hill, NJ. Mother Febronia realized her dream of the Congregation's construction and dedication of the Blessed Edmund Early Childhood Education Center in Cherry Hill in 1996. She established the Marian Residence for Senior Ladies in Cherry Hill in 1989 that functioned for 20 years. She contributed further to Catholic education by sending the Little Servant Sisters to work in five diocesan schools in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and also to the Cardinal's Residence in Philadelphia plus a mission among the poor in Ensenada and Mexico. They all bore fruit for a time, such as in Milltown, NJ for 40 years and in Three Rivers, MA for 18 years.

Mother Febronia encouraged vocations to the Little Servant Sisters and the arrival of Sisters from Poland with their further studies and works of mercy at home and on the missions abroad. A humble, kindhearted, shrewd and cheerful religious with great trust in Divine Providence, her service and happy life were marked by her love of Jesus, community and people whom she remembered in prayer. Sister Febronia is survived by her religious community, her nieces and nephews in Poland, France and USA.
